Long Way Home
Troy Cassar-Daley
©2002 Essence Records/EMI

Review by Jo van Leerdam

One of Australia’s leading country singer/songwriters, Troy Cassar-Daley won 3 Golden Guitar awards for this album in January of this year. The album features the song “Born To Survive” which has become something of an anthem for the drought-affected farmers and people of country and outback Australia.

The positive attitude of this song is typical of the tracks on this CD. The songs are about community, commitment and a “never give up” outlook on life. Troy’s lyrics tell stories that portray people and situations in a down to earth and often humourous manner that is typically Australian.

This is a very enjoyable CD. Long Way Home has a refined and polished, modern country style, but has retained a very Australian quality. Cassar-Daley’s performance is without pretence, and is mercifully free from American stylization.

While it’s not a Christian CD, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys music that is easy to listen to, and to anyone who has enjoyed the music of people like John Denver and John Williamson.
