Strong Tower
Kutless

Review by Jo van Leerdam

Like the Supertones, Kutless have departed from their usual style for this album. The guitar isn’t as heavy, the vocals are more restrained, and the musical style is more conservative than you would normally expect from this band. I have to confess that when I first listened to Strong Tower, I thought I must have put the wrong CD into the player!
Interestingly, I think this album showcases the vocal abilities of the band better than their previous albums. It’s good to see a more reflective and worshipful tone, and a greater emphasis on vocal expression and clarity of diction.

The songs on this album are really well performed and presented. There are great covers which Kutless have made distinct from the originals and other covers by giving them a “makeover” with new guitar and vocal arrangements. The original tracks on this album are outstanding – both lyrically exquisite and musically powerful. Together, these songs comprise an album full of sincere and earnest declarations of love for God and desire to be in relationship with Him.

My verdict: Two worship albums that are different than the styles generally embraced by the artists, but which demonstrate the sincerity of faith and adoration of God that is the foundation of the lyrical and musical expression of both bands. Both have a lot to offer an audience, but my preference is the Kutless album, mainly because I’m not a fan of reggae and I found so many tracks in a row in that style rather annoying.
