Let it go

Review by Jo van Leerdam

Paul Colman has been around for quite some time, and over the years he’s earned a reputation for writing songs that are honest, simple and earnest in their expression of faith and their description of what it’s like to live as a child of God.

That same honesty and child-like faith characterise the songs on this album. This time without the other members of the Trio, Paul Colman has put together an album that expresses both his love for the Lord, and his desire to serve and be obedient to God’s leading and calling in his life.

There are times when you wonder why an album is given its title. There is no question regarding this CD. “Let It Go” obviously refers to Hebrews 12:1 which tells us to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. “ These songs are about making loving and serving the Lord our first priority – giving up ourselves and the things we might otherwise pursue. We must ‘let these things go’ before we can live wholeheartedly for Him.

Listening to the lyrics of this album, it becomes evident that this isn’t a collection of trite songs about living “the good life” as a Christian. Colman has obviously had his times of trial, doubt and soul searching as any Christian does. Yet his message of faith and trust in God are crystal clear. Colman gives honour and praise for the redeeming love of God, and amazed gratitude for his salvation, at the feet of Jesus. “I owe it all to you, Jesus… and in Your grace I am found.”

The chorus of ‘Holding Onto You’ states confidently: “You never change, Oh God, all that I want is you… When I’m afraid, Your love remains, Oh God, I’m holding on to you.” This catchy chorus is one of those that get stuck in your head all day – but what a great thought to meditate on!

This is a CD that’s really easy to listen to. The music is interesting and varied, and accompanies Colman’s heartfelt lyrics perfectly. There are some catchy tunes and some very reflective moods, blended with great musicianship and clear vocals. This album has the hallmarks of Paul Colman’s other albums – well crafted songs, refined and polished, but not made slick or ‘plastic’ by overproduction.

There are many people out there who are Paul Colman Trio fans, and they’ll buy this CD without hesitation. They won’t be disappointed. I’d like to challenge those who haven’t heard a PCT album before to give ‘Let It Go’ a try – not just because there’s plenty on this album that will give you aesthetic pleasure, but also because it’s laden with food for thought and reflection. It’s a great album that clearly attests to God’s trustworthiness, compassion, and saving grace. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a winner.
