Grace Like Rain

Todd Agnew
© 2003 Ardent Music

Review by Jo van Leerdam

Given up by his Native American mother at birth, Todd Agnew was adopted as a baby into a family who were committed to raising him to know the Lord. He gives his parents the credit for his strong foundation in faith and knowledge, his understanding of ‘adoption by grace’ and for his musical heritage. As he grew older, Todd became aware of the distinction between the songs and hymns they sang in church, and the more contemporary Christian music movement. He enjoyed the contemporary music more, especially as a worship leader, but could not simply discard the hymns that had been sung for so long. “When I started breaking down these songs, realizing the depth and value of their meaning, I realized that I would have to teach them again, making them more relevant."

Rather than choose one style over the other, Todd has blended the two musical influences on his life, resulting in music that sounds contemporary but still holds the depth and teaching of the more traditional hymns. This isn’t a case of simply putting old words to new tunes – Todd has entwined old and new lyrics together, effectively bridging what is meaningful to one generation with that which gives meaning to another.

‘Grace Like Rain’ takes the words of Amazing Grace, and with some of Todd’s own lyrics added, presents them in a guitar rock form. ‘Come Ye Sinners’ is similarly, a new version of the hymn by the same name, melded with additional lyrics by Todd. The words and tune of “Saviour like a Shepherd lead us’ (a hidden bonus track) remain unchanged, although the presentation is a more contemporary setting. Far from being flippant or lacking respect, these new renditions of old hymns really do make the words more approachable and relevant for younger people.

Todd’s original lyrics are characterised by honesty, simplicity, and a strong reliance on Scripture. One song is dedicated to Romans 12:1, and a faithful and humble response to the call of that verse. This attitude of faith and humility is diffused throughout the album. Christ is acknowledged as Lord, as Shepherd and as Redeemer. All glory is given to Him, and we must submit our lives to Him and give away all that stands in the way of a right relationship with Him.

Todd Agnew does not limit himself to one musical style. While vocally he sounds a lot like Jason Wade (Lifehouse lead vocalist), the songs on “Grace Like Rain” range from acoustic to power ballad to strident guitar rock. The styling of the album may not seem very original or different to many listeners, but I believe its strength lies in the profound lyrics and truthfulness of expression, combined with passionate and powerful vocals.

I am confident that anyone who enjoys the music of Third Day, Lifehouse, or The Calling would appreciate and enjoy “Grace Like Rain”. This album would make a great gift for teens or young adults, and would be a great addition to a family collection.
