CD Review The Collection Jennifer Knapp Review by Jo van Leerdam
Knapp’s vocals are clear, expressive and easily understood. She has a strong voice, and yet at times evokes tenderness and reflection. In every song, sincerity and honesty characterise both the lyrics and the style. I always appreciate having the lyrics provided in the cover booklet, so I can read along and contemplate what the artist is saying instead of trying to catch the words the first few times I hear it. Being a compilation, this album does not give the lyrics. However, the cover booklet does give us responses to each song from people who have written to Jennifer, having been touched, or taught, by her music. These testimonies lend powerful reinforcement to the already compelling messages of the songs themselves, and these insights from other listeners impressed me so much that I didn’t mind not having the lyrics in the booklet after all. Knapp writes and sings from the perspective of someone who is keenly aware of her need for the Lord. She expresses dependence on God’s provision and rejoices at His work in her life to both redeem and remake her. She deals with temptation, doubts and the sinful nature in an open and unpretentious manner – we are sinful creatures and we fall short of God’s glory. Yet the Lord is always close at hand, to forgive, comfort and renew us when we seek Him in repentance and faith. Life can deal us blows that we cannot deal with alone, but again, the Lord is always near and offers us strength and courage to face whatever challenge is at hand. We are not condemned because we belong to Christ, who is working in us and through us. His love is everlasting and the only right response is gratitude and faithful obedience. As it should be with each of us, Knapp’s doubts and trials serve to strengthen her faith and lead her to glorify the Lord for His faithfulness. The second album offers some nice surprises for those whose tastes in music lie with the more traditional hymns and worship music. “Sing Alleluia” is a wonderful song performed by Jennifer Knapp with Mac Powell from Third Day and Nichole Nordeman. The lyrics are taken in part from the lyrics of the hymn “All Creatures Of Our God and King”. It is an uplifting anthem of praise which would appeal to a traditional audience. “Hallowed” is based on the Lord’s Prayer. This song is reflective and has a beautiful accompaniment of acoustic guitar and strings. A more contemporary arrangement of “When Peace Like a River” performed by Knapp and Audio Adrenaline may not appeal much to traditionalists, but may help to make more relevant to younger audiences this hymn which is a favourite of many. Even though double albums are more expensive, this one is absolutely worth it. There is stylistically something for everyone, and
it’s one of those albums that would be appealing for the whole family.
This one gets my wholehearted recommendation.
