Green Eye of the Storm
John Rendle-Short, Banner of Truth

Review by Rev. John Zuidema

This book covers the lives of four distinguished men, Philip Henry Gosse (1810-1888), George John Romanes (1848-1894), Authur Rendle-Short (1880-1953) and his son John Rendle-Short, the author of this book. Their lives revolve around their struggle with evolution (Darwinism) verses the biblical account of creation, as well as the historicity of the great flood.

John Rendle-Short has done some excellent research into the lives of these men, their education, their writings, their times, and their struggles. In each case, these men find themselves crushed between their two major loves; the seemingly irresistible force of science, and the immovable inerrancy of Scripture.

On the one hand, the book outlines the traps and dangers of limiting God’s infinite power and creativity to the study and understanding of man’s finite mind. On the other hand, the book is also about God’s faithfulness and love, because despite these men’s wavering and sometimes faltering faith, God brought them to a greater understanding of his own greatness and the truth of His Word. It is also wonderful to see how God in his wisdom can use men who struggle with these issues to strengthen the faith of others who are also struggling with this debate. As you read this book you become more aware of the issues involved, but the book also makes you appreciate that faith is a gift of God.

Throughout the book, John Rendle-Short shows how Scripture and the Holy Spirit challenged and softened the hearts of these men. Some even repented on their deathbed for their doubt and unbelief concerning the first eleven chapters of Genesis. He also challenges those who proclaim the creation message to read 2 Tim 2:24-26.

This book is not always easy reading, but would be of interest to those who struggle or are fascinated with the debate between evolution and creation. May those who read it be encouraged in their understanding and the truth of Scripture as I have been.
