Philippians
Gordon Fee, IVP, 1999, 200pp
Review by Rev. John Westendorp
Someone once called Paul’s letter to the Philippians
the ‘letter of continual rejoicing’. Philippi was one of Paul’s less
troublesome congregations, although like all churches it had its
problems: some divisions from within and some opposition from without.
Gordon Fee has now written a lovely little commentary to guide us
through some of the finer points of Paul’s encouragement to his
Philippian congregation.
This commentary is part of the “IVP New Testament Commentary Series”
which is designed to appeal to a wide readership. While these
commentaries have depth and don’t avoid the tough questions they are
nevertheless quite readable for those who have no knowledge of Greek
(rather reminiscent in style to the popular Dutch ‘Korte Verklaring’).
Technical and special notes for scholars are put in footnotes so that
they do not interrupt the flow of the commentary.
To say that one could use Gordon Fee’s current offering for devotional
reading is probably claiming too much (except for the very keen) but it
is certainly a valuable aid for anyone involved in a Bible Study of this
epistle and who wants to look a little deeper. For the Bible Study
leader it would be an invaluable aid. At the same time I have found the
commentaries in these series are also valuable in preparations for my
preaching. Highly recommended.
