Seedlings, Guiding
little children in the ways of God
Helen Capill, N.Z. $12.50 Aust

Review by Wendy Warren
Here’s a wonderful gift to wrap up exquisitely and take with you the
next time you make a visit to new parents to admire their precious
little bundle. Or perhaps it would make a helpful gift from the church
community as a start to their baptismal pledge to support parents in
bringing up their child.
Helen Capill has written an accessible and practical guide for Christian
parents, which draws sensitively and appropriately from her life
experiences as child, mother and grandmother. Seedlings is an
attractively presented slender publication which covers the whole span
of parenting in twenty two short and pithy chapters. Its main focus
seems to offer suggestions and encouragement, sometimes even consolation
– all valuable gifts from someone who has already walked the parenting
path.
In her own words Helen says, “...I share some ideas about the ways in
which we can bring up our children, incorporating traditional Christian
values, constantly respecting the child’s personality in a caring,
loving and secure environment.” She acknowledges that the book contains
her own version of how to do this but points out that “we are all
responsible to work out our own values for ourselves.”
This is a great little resource, which we should make good use of -
order one as soon as possible – and spread the encouragement around.
When Christians go to the effort to distill their experiences in a form
that allows others to benefit from their wisdom we should make the most
of the opportunity. Who knows, just reading this book may inspire you to
write something helpful too.
Thank you, Helen, and may your supplies soon be snapped up.
