Israel and the Church
Essays in honour of Allan Macdonald Harman,

Ed. D.J.W. Milne

Review by Rev. John Westendorp

Dr. Allan Harman will be known to many of our readers as one-time lecturer in Old Testament at that Reformed Theological College in Geelong. Allan recently retired as lecturer at the Presbyterian Theological College in Melbourne. This present volume is in honour of his 65th birthday and his retirement.

Like all books of this nature, a collection of essays contains variety. There will some essays that appeal to one reader but not to others, but there is usually something for everyone.

For the theologians among us there is food for thought. Peter Barnes re-examines some of Liberalism’s pious attacks on Scripture more than a century ago. Richard Gaffin Jr expounds on ‘the obedience of faith’ in Romans and, particularly relevant to the title of this book, Douglas Kelly grapples with nature of the church showing how the Reformed view differs from that of others.

For the Bible student John Davies presents a study of Zechariah 3 and there is also a paper from the pen of the late Ray Zorn on Romans 10.
For those with a sociological bent, Douglas Milne has recast the parable of the Prodigal Son(s) into a picture of post-modernism, liberalism and evangelicalism.

Allan Harman’s involvement in Christian Education is reflected on the one hand in an article by Meryl McEwen (good reading for all Christian teachers) and on the other hand in an article by Peter Jensen on the place of the confessions in theological education.

Wim Velema rounds off the volume with a pastoral reflection on how to deal with ethical questions faced by pastors and their flock. He advises pastors not to hand over problems to others but to stay involved even while drawing on the help of other professionals
