Book Review

Real Life- Surviving after education
Joanna Sunderland, 2005. 127p

Review by Ray Hoekzema

“There is not a square inch of the entire creation about which Jesus Christ does not cry out, “This is mine! This belongs to me!” These are words spoken by a former Dutch Prime Minister, Abraham Kuyper that echo along the decades. They are still relevant, but the author wants young folk to note how this applies to them; in particular during transition, from the time of the last year in university into the workforce; and into marriage. This booklet is somewhat of a survival guide, helping the student reader make practical plans for revision, rest and spiritual growth.

The journey begins during the final year when the question arises: Where to from here? The largest part of the booklet concentrates on life in the world of work, on who am I at work; on workplace issues, money, a gap-year maybe, relationships, etc. There’s a valuable chapter on faith that deals with the time when Christian support groups at ‘uni’ are no longer there. Joanne confesses that she still finds growing up a difficult process and finds it hard to take her own advice. She believes that only in trying, can she become the person God made her to be. A helpful booklet, I believe.
