Book Review
Reviewed by John Rietveld – National Missions Co-ordinator
A useful, 4-part study for deacons. Section 1 outlines the broad range of diaconal tasks and opportunities, and presents specific guidelines for developing a working diaconal plan. Section 2 presents inter-personal skills development; listening skills, feedback, prayer and encouragement. The third chapter is built around 2 case studies, and provides the double focus of how to help others with specific aid, action plans, budgeting, mentoring etc, as well as examining one’s own attitude towards poverty, dependency, and receiving help. The last chapter focuses on the local congregation – how to enlist and recruit, how to promote social justice and responsible stewardship, and it also presents a range of options for congregational involvement. Easy to understand, practical, and would be an excellent component of ongoing in-service training for deacons. Designed to be run by the deacons themselves, it does not demand external facilitation. Some first time deacons who are going through it use the words “challenging,” “broad-ranging,” and “made me re-evaluate what a deacon is and does.”
