Ethan the Shepherd

(C) June Carter

Ethan the shepherd
Looked up into the night.
“See there! My brother shepherds,
What be that wondrous light?”

“‘Tis but the moon,” one shepherd told,
“With her pale white eye,
Riding there between the stars,
Across the darkened sky.”

“‘Tis not the moon,” Ethan denied,
“Nor is it cloud or star,
For I can see bright angel wings.
And hear hal-le-lu-jah!”

Then as the light drew nearer,
And bathed each shepherd’s head,
They one by one, fell on their knees,
All trembling and dread.

“Be not afraid sweet shepherds!”
They heard an angel call.
“A child is born whom we salute,
As King and Lord of all.

“Go quickly now and find Him,
Who’ll save the souls of men,
And be a shepherd to God’s sheep.
He’s born in Bethlehem.”

From Ethan and his brothers,
Then every terror fled.
They ran to seek the Christ-Child,
To do as the angel said.

Soon within a stable
Where kings had gathered ‘round,
Warm swaddled in a manger,
The Prince of peace they found.

Ethan the shepherd,
When his years were old would tell,
How that night near Bethlehem
A light from heaven fell.

How with his brother shepherds,
And kings alike, as well,
His joined the angels’ voices
To sing that glad No-el.
