Friendship

Jean Sietzema-Dickson

What do I love about my friend
I, for whom time has come,
to sit in the seat of the dying
and know I am going home?

I love him because he serves the King
the same King that I serve
- the King who is Lord of everything
serves him with grace and verve.

I love him because he hears my heart
when I don’t know what it’s saying
and because he punctures pomposity
with fun words he is playing.

He has been my friend for many years
and he knows my weak spots well
but he does not use them to hurt my pride
or to push me into hell.

He knows when I need a bit of space
knows when I’m really struggling
and he will return with some special grace
and suggest we try some juggling.

He shares the anguish I feel this day
and I’ll share his tomorrow.
We understand that life is rich
because we share our sorrow.

And every day that we live we grow
the bonding growing stronger
till we can speak for each other in stress
and wish that life were longer.
