Unto  Us...!

Jack van Bemmel

FOR UNTO US A CHILD IS BORN...
The shops don’t mind, they will agree,
Their tills run hot, a good way to be
They even play a Scripture clip,
Of shepherds and a Christ in a crib.
Their staff must wear the Santa hat
and so we’re trapped in the money net.

...UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN...
The boardroom is all decorated
and soon they’ll all be intoxicated.
“Merry Christmas!” is what they’ll tell you
Plenty of booze and a “toppo” or two.
The workers stay loyal for another year,
just give them a smile and plenty of beer.

...AND THE GOVERNMENT WILL BE UPON HIS SHOULDERS...
The city is bright, we’ve spent a million,
The people will come, at least a zillion.
Promote the birth of the new-born son.
Whether it’s true or not, we decide later on.
What the city needs is plenty of light,
Forget about Christ and that first Christmas night.

...HE WILL BE CALLED WONDERFUL COUNSELLOR...
The poor and the lonely, they think it’s great
They get some attention, a meal and a chat with a mate.
The people are there with a smile and a song,
but, generally speaking, it doesn’t last long.
Too soon we go back to our everyday living;
I mean, you just can’t keep on giving!

...ALMIGHTY GOD...
The shops go back to normal, they’ve made a packet
No smile, no cheer, finished is the Christ-child racket.
The boss is back in his fine padded chair;
back to work now, you’ve all had your share!
The lights have gone out, the city is black.
The down and outs, they too have gone back.

...EVERLASTING FATHER...
Two thousand years, since the stable event,
Two thousand years, since the call to repent.
He came down to earth once and for all.
We have made it a circus, a gimmick like the latest fancy ball.
Please stop, remember the gospel is clear,
God’s present will last, yes, year after year.

...PRINCE OF PEACE...
The candles burn up, the turkey won’t last,
New Year is approaching, for some a bit fast.
Are you ready to face an uncertain tomorrow?
With all its surprises, the joys and the sorrows.
take hold of this Saviour so gracefully given.
That is Christmas, that is Truth, that is eternal living.
