Love Beyond Compare

by Linda Eschler

In Ephrata’s fields, a lad of ten, I worked as shepherd’s boy;
When midway through a winter’s night, we were o’ertook by joy.
And as the angel had bid us “Go,” we surely all went down
To see the miracle to us announced, in Bethl’em town.
And as we worshipped and adored
The Baby lying there,
Our hearts gave thanks to God above
For love beyond compare.

Full thirty years had passed and I had been struck blind;
Through the dark my stumbling way forever doomed to find.
When on the road a Stranger stopped, and touched my tortured eyes;
I looked and saw my Healer’s face, framed against the skies.
And as He looked upon my face,
My gratitude found there,
In those friendly eyes I saw
Such love beyond compare.

I followed Him throughout the land, to listen to His voice,
To hear His words of wisdom; discipleship my choice.
Many signs and miracles were worked through Jesus’ love.
He healed with power, but glory gave to the Father up above.
And all who heard and felt this grace,
Who knew His loving care,
Witnessed in their Saviour’s eyes
Such love beyond compare.

In Jerusalem, His ministry caused jealousy and hate;
Arrested, tried and sentenced, to an excruciating fate.
Crucified! On Golgotha! O, we could scarce believe
That all we’d hoped for was to end. There was no reprieve.
And as His gaze upon us fell,
As He hung dying there,
His anguished eyes still expressed
Such love beyond compare.

He lives! He lives! The mourners can stop keening.
Angels say He is alive and Mary swears she’s seen Him.
He meets with those who knew Him well. We testify it’s true.
Jesus lives! He reigns on high! Out there, beyond the blue!
Oh that this, His greatest gift,
God’s people all can share.
The Father’s love, He gave to us,
Such love beyond compare.
