Bible Reading Plan

October 2008

Rev John Goris

Are you prepared for this month’s readings which require more determination and a deeper overall input?  The book of Numbers has some familiar passages, but other parts seem rather boring: numbers, numbers…  Yet this book provides great lessons for God’s people: 1Corinthians 10:1-13 is based on it.  In our pilgrimage through this world we may sing in tune with Numbers, “Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah!”

THEME:  God leads His people and moves along with them

An “organised” people

Ask yourself as you read these passages

  • What was the numbering all about?
  • What was the camp set-up and order of marching?
  • What did you notice about the census of the Levites?
  • Is organisation important for the church? In what way?

Wednesday 1st        Numbers 1

Thursday 2nd            Numbers 2

Friday 3rd                  Numbers 3

Saturday 4th              Numbers 4

A holy God at the centre of this organised people

Ask yourself as you read these passages

  • How is God’s holiness to be shown (positively and negatively) among the people?
  • How did all tribes contribute to the dedication of the tabernacle?
  • What “topped off” the Lord’s presence?
  • Like a mighty army moves the church of God” : Does Numbers portray this?
  • Any rebels in their midst? Rebelling against whom?

Sunday 5th                 Numbers 5

Monday 6th                Numbers 6

Tuesday 7th                Numbers 7 & 8

Wednesday 8th          Numbers 9

Thursday 9th               Numbers 10

Friday 10th                  Numbers 11

Saturday 11th              Numbers 12

Who’s in charge here?

Ask yourself as you read these passages

  • Why did they fail to enter the promised land?
  • Unbelief and rebellion come together. How?
  • Priesthood and offerings in God’s way: why?
  • What happened to the sons of Korah? (see Ps 84,85 etc)

Sunday 12th                  Numbers 13

Monday 13th                 Numbers 14

Tuesday  14th                Numbers 15

Wednesday 15th           Numbers 16

Thursday 16th                Numbers 17 & 18

Friday  17th                     Numbers 19

Saturday 18th                 Numbers 20

Hints about the coming Saviour

Ask yourself as you read these passages

  • The bronze serpent and the star from Jacob are prophetic. How?
  • The enemy attacks, but…….   (see Matthew 16:18)
  • What was Balaam’s devilish advice (31:16)?
  • How must God’s army today be on guard against the wiles of Satan (Eph 6:10-20)?

Sunday 19th                   Numbers 21

Monday 20th                  Numbers 22

Tuesday 21st                   Numbers 23

Wednesday 22nd            Numbers 24

Thursday 23rd                 Numbers 25

Friday 24th                       Numbers 31

Saturday 25th                   Numbers 26

Preparing for the inheritance

Ask yourself as you read these passages

  • A fair inheritance for all. Have you noted how?
  • A greater than Moses and Joshua makes us heirs.  Who? How?
  • Celebrating the presence of a holy God in their midst?  How?
  • God takes vows/promises seriously.  What vows do we take in “church”?
  • The inheritance of the Levites was in the midst of the various tribes. Why?

Sunday 26th                     Numbers 27 & 36

Monday 27th                    Numbers 28 & 29

Tuesday 28th                     Numbers 30

Wednesday 29th               Numbers 32 & 33

Thursday 30th                    Numbers 34

Friday 31st                          Numbers 35

Conclusion

Has the pilgrimage hymn of the church (“Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah..”) taken on a new meaning in the light of your study on Numbers?

Reformation Day:  A reformed church should ever be reforming in the light of God’s word.  To what extent are we guarding our inheritance today (2 Timothy 1:13,14)?
